Demo mode (free trial sign-up)

Demo mode turns a DocView Capture site into a public trial: visitors sign up at /try with their e-mail address and a few details, and get a workspace (organisation) of their own with ready-made Batch Setups. It is meant for the vendor's own demo site. Customer installations leave it off: then there is no sign-up page and nothing about demos appears.

Switching it on

Demo mode is a server setting, so nobody can switch it on from inside the application:

Where Setting
Azure App Service Application setting Demo__Enabled = true
appsettings.json "Demo": { "Enabled": true }

Restart the site after changing it. The home page then shows Try it free buttons.

Set up Settings › E-mail too: visitors then confirm their e-mail address by a link before their demo starts. Without e-mail, the demo starts straight after the sign-up form.

What a visitor gets

  1. They fill in their name, work e-mail, organisation, job title, phone, country and what they would like to capture, and agree to the demo terms.
  2. They open the link in the e-mail and choose a password.
  3. DocView makes an organisation for them, for example Example Trading Ltd (demo), with the default scan profiles and copies of the demo Batch Setups, and signs them in as its administrator.

The top bar shows how many days are left. Each demo lasts 14 days and holds 200 pages; change both, and the Batch Setups demos start with, under Settings › System settings (Demo length, Demo page limit, Demo Batch Setups). Only list sample setups there, never a customer's.

What a demo cannot do

A visitor administers their own organisation, but nothing that reaches your server, your network or other organisations:

  • exports go to DocView storage only; folders, SFTP, databases, web services and C# scripts are refused, and setups copied, imported or made from a template are switched to DocView storage;
  • no import sources (watched folders, mailboxes), database lookups, scheduled tasks, API keys or e-mailed report schedules;
  • no cloud OCR services (DocView OmniRead is used instead);
  • no users, secrets, settings, downloads or other site administration;
  • no more pages than the limit, and nothing new after the demo ends.

Following up

Site administrators see every sign-up under System › Demo sign-ups: the person's details, whether they agreed to be contacted, their demo's end date and how many pages and batches it holds. From there you can:

  • +14 days: 14 more days and 200 more pages; an ended demo opens again;
  • End: closes the demo now;
  • Download as spreadsheet: all sign-ups as a CSV file.

To hear about each new demo by e-mail, enter your address in the Tell about new demos setting.

Ended demos are closed automatically every hour: their people can no longer sign in, and see a message asking them to contact you.
