The workstation installer puts all of DocView Capture on one Windows PC: the web app, the DocView Worker and the database. It is the easiest way to try DocView Capture, and it suits people who scan or import documents on their own PC.
Important: A workstation installation serves only the local PC. Other computers cannot connect to it. For several users, use Install on IIS instead.
Before you start
| Minimum | |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit |
| Processor | 4 cores |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM (16 GB recommended) |
| Disk | 10 GB free, plus space for your documents |
You also need administrator rights on the PC, the file DocViewCapture-Workstation-<version>.zip, and an internet connection if SQL Server is not installed yet. See System requirements.
Install in five steps
- Unzip
DocViewCapture-Workstation-<version>.zipto a folder, for example your Downloads folder. - Double-click Install.cmd in the unzipped folder. Windows asks for administrator rights: select Yes.
- Answer two questions in the black window, or just press Enter twice to keep the suggestions:
- Install folder -
C:\Program Files\DocView Capture; - Port -
5210, so DocView Capture opens athttp://localhost:5210.
- Install folder -
- Wait while the installer sets up SQL Server Express (only if no SQL Server is installed - this can take 10 minutes) and the two Windows services.
- Finish the setup in your browser. The installer opens the setup wizard:
- Database: .\SQLEXPRESS is already chosen. Select Test connection, then Create database and continue.
- Administrator: type your user name, your name and a password (twice).
- Storage: keep the folder and select Save and continue.
- Site address: keep
http://localhost:5210and your time zone. - Extras: optional. Tick Load six sample invoices to see DocView Capture at work.
- Finish: select Finish setup.
That's it. Continue with the Quick start.
Note: You never edit a settings file. The database connection is kept on this PC, protected by Windows.
What the installer does
- SQL Server. It uses SQL Server already on the PC (SQL Server Express first). If there is none, it installs SQL Server 2022 Express with winget. It gives the two DocView Capture services a sign-in on it; the web app may create its database.
- Windows services. It installs and starts two services:
- DocView Capture Web serves DocView Capture at
http://localhost:5210, on this PC only. - DocView Worker does the background work: OCR, separation, classification, extraction, export and import polling. Until you finish the setup wizard it waits, then starts working within a few minutes by itself.
- DocView Capture Web serves DocView Capture at
- Shortcuts. DocView Capture on the desktop and in the Start menu, plus DocView Capture Help and Uninstall DocView Capture.
- Browser. It opens the setup wizard.
Both services start automatically with Windows. You don't need to start anything by hand.
Installer options
Most people don't need these. To install without questions, run the installer from PowerShell as administrator:
| Parameter | Default | What it sets |
|---|---|---|
-InstallPath |
C:\Program Files\DocView Capture |
Where the program files are installed. |
-Port |
5210 |
The port of http://localhost:<port>. |
-DataPath |
C:\ProgramData\DocViewCapture |
Where page images, outputs and working files are kept. |
-Quiet |
Ask nothing; use the parameters or the defaults. |
.\Install-DocViewWorkstation.ps1 -Port 8080 -DataPath 'D:\DocViewCapture' -Quiet
Tip: Put
-DataPathon a drive with plenty of free space.
Set up scanning
You don't need anything extra to import files. To scan from a scanner connected to this PC:
- In DocView Capture, select Scan, then Create batch.
- The first time, the Scan screen offers to Install the DocView Scan Agent. Select Download and open the downloaded file.
- The agent installs for your Windows account and connects within a few seconds.
If Windows says it protected your PC, choose More info, then Run anyway. See Scan Agent.
Upgrade to a newer version
- Download and unzip the newer
DocViewCapture-Workstation-<version>.zip. - Double-click Install.cmd in the new folder. Nothing is asked.
Your settings, documents and database are kept, and the database is upgraded automatically. See Upgrading. After an upgrade, the Scan screen may ask you to update the Scan Agent: select Update.
Uninstall
Open the Start menu and select Uninstall DocView Capture. This removes the program and the services. Your documents and the database are kept, so you can install again later without losing anything.
To remove the documents and the database as well, run the uninstaller with -RemoveData.
Important:
-RemoveDatadeletes your documents and the database permanently. Export anything you need first.
If something goes wrong
- The browser shows "can't reach this page". Wait a minute and refresh. Check that DocView Capture Web is running in the Windows Services app.
- The setup wizard cannot connect to .\SQLEXPRESS. Check that the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service is running, then select Test connection again.
- Batches don't move after release. Check that DocView Worker is running, then check Administration › DocView Workers.
- SQL Server Express failed to install. Check your internet connection and that winget is available, then run Install.cmd again. You can also install SQL Server Express yourself and pick it in the setup wizard.
