Install or update with DocView Capture Setup

DocView Capture Setup is one program that installs DocView Capture, or updates an installation, wherever you want it. You choose the place; Setup asks only what that place needs, including the licence, then does the work and shows each step.

Which file to use

File Use it on
DocViewCapture-Setup-<version>-offline.exe Windows. Everything is inside, so no internet connection is needed for a Windows PC or IIS.
DocViewCapture-Setup-<version>.exe Windows, online. Smaller; downloads only what the chosen installation needs.
DocViewCapture-Setup-<version>-offline-osx-arm64 (or -osx-x64, -linux-x64, -linux-arm64) A Mac (Apple silicon or Intel), or a Linux server, for Docker or a cloud.

Copy the file to the computer and run it. On Windows the wizard opens (Windows asks for administrator rights). On macOS and Linux run it in a terminal:

chmod +x DocViewCapture-Setup-1.6.0-offline-osx-arm64
./DocViewCapture-Setup-1.6.0-offline-osx-arm64

Note: On a Mac, the first time macOS may say the program is from an unidentified developer: right-click it in Finder, choose Open, then Open again.

Where it can install

Choice What you get What you need
This Windows PC Web app and a DocView Worker as Windows services. For a trial, a small office or one scanning station. Windows 10/11 or Windows Server. SQL Server on the PC or another server; SQL Server Express is installed when the PC has none.
Windows Server (IIS) The web app as an IIS site with your host name and certificate, the DocView Worker as a Windows service. Windows Server; IIS and the .NET Hosting Bundle are installed when missing.
Docker Web app, DocView Workers and SQL Server Express in containers, optionally DocView OmniRead. Works on a Linux server, a Mac mini or MacBook, or Docker Desktop on Windows. Docker Desktop or Docker Engine with Compose, running.
Azure (new) A complete installation in your subscription: Container Apps, Azure SQL, Blob storage, managed identity. The Azure CLI (az).
Azure (existing web app) DocView in a web app, SQL database and storage account you already have. The Azure CLI, Windows.
AWS ECS Fargate, RDS for SQL Server and S3 with one CloudFormation stack. The AWS CLI with credentials.
Google Cloud Cloud Run, Cloud SQL for SQL Server and Cloud Storage. gcloud and bash (Linux, macOS, WSL or Cloud Shell).
Additional DocView Worker Another DocView Worker for an existing DocView Capture, on this computer. The server's address and worker key — or the DocView Setup from its Downloads page, which has both. See Downloads.
DocView OmniRead for DocView Capture The recognition service on this computer, connected to an existing DocView Capture. Give an instance name to install another one beside an existing one (its own service, port and settings). The server's address and its OmniRead key — or the DocView Setup from its Downloads page.
DocView OmniRead (standalone) The recognition service on its own, for your applications: admin page, API keys, API documentation, its own licence. Windows 10/11 or Windows Server. See DocView OmniRead on its own.

The steps

  1. Install or update. For an update, settings, documents and the database are kept and only the program is replaced (IIS and the Windows PC make a backup first).

  2. The place's questions, such as the port, folders, host name and certificate, or the resource group and region. Each question shows what it is for and a sensible default.

  3. Set up (new installations on this Windows PC or IIS). Choose Now, in this Setup (recommended) and the next pages set up DocView Capture completely, each page depending on your answers:

    • Database: the SQL Server (the ones on this computer are suggested; any server or Azure SQL can be typed), signing in with Windows or a SQL login, Create a new database or Use an existing database, its name, and the schema (dbo, or a schema of DocView's own such as docview to share a database with other programs). The connection is tested before you go on: a server that cannot be reached, a database that already exists when you chose a new one, or one that is missing when you chose an existing one is reported straight away.
    • Documents: a folder (on the computer or a network share) or Azure Blob Storage.
    • Administrator: user name, name, e-mail and password of the first user.
    • Site: the address users open and the time zone.

When the program is installed, DocView Capture creates or upgrades the database (with all its tables, in the schema), creates the administrator and finishes its own set-up; Setup shows each step's result. Anything that could not be done is left to the setup wizard in the browser, which opens with that step. Choose Later, in the setup wizard in the browser to answer these questions there instead.

  4. Licence. Choose one:

    • I have a licence file: choose the .dvlic file from Dev Soft UK. It is installed when DocView Capture starts.
    • Start with the 30-day evaluation: Setup shows the installation ID. Send it to Dev Soft UK to receive the licence file, then load it on the Licence page.
    • Keep the installed licence (updates).
  5. Summary. Check what will happen. Save these answers keeps them in a file to repeat the installation or update later (passwords are left out).

  6. Install. Every step is shown and kept in a log (%LOCALAPPDATA%\DocView Capture Setup\logs on Windows).

  7. Done. The address to open and, when you set it up in Setup, the result of each step: sign in with the administrator you chose. Otherwise (or for cloud installations, with the setup token) the setup wizard in the browser creates the administrator.

For AWS and Google Cloud the licence is installed afterwards on the Licence page, where the installation ID is shown.

Updating

Run the new version of Setup and choose the same place with Update an existing installation. Your previous answers are remembered (except passwords), so usually you only click Next.

Without the wizard

Setup also runs in a terminal and without questions, for scripts:

Option Meaning
--console Questions in the terminal instead of the wizard (Windows).
--target <place> windows-pc, iis, docker, azure, azure-existing, aws or gcp (--list shows them).
--answers <file> Answers from a saved file; only missing ones are asked.
--quiet No questions: answers and defaults only.
--save-answers <file> Save the answers (add --include-secrets to keep passwords; keep such a file private).
--source <folder> Packages from a release folder instead (a USB stick or network share).
--dry-run Show what would be done without changing anything.
DocViewCapture-Setup-1.6.0-offline.exe --target docker --answers docker.answers.json --quiet

If something goes wrong

Setup stops at the step that failed and says why, for example "Docker is not installed" or "The Azure CLI is not installed". Fix it and run Setup again: your answers are remembered, and steps that already finished are safe to repeat. The log has every command and its output, with passwords and keys hidden.

The manual instructions for each place are still available: Windows PC, IIS, Docker, Azure, existing Azure resources, AWS and Google Cloud.
